You know how fancy cars, luxurious resorts and fresh new sneakers are so sick? Well, I’d like to preface this post by saying that when I use the word sick, that’s not the kind of sick I’m referring to 😛

I’m referring to the thing that’s sick but not actually sick at all. Also known as the common cold. The sniffly bug that goes around every year when winter arrives. NY gets cold, dry, and phlegmy (please excuse the gross word usage but it was the most fitting).

This time of year is one of the most important times to practice self-care. To live with intention, with every decision you make. Avoiding overcrowding and overconsumption. Not overcrowding or over consuming whatever you digest inside your belly, and inside your mind.

Keeping your calendar at bay and making sure it is manageable is a huge factor in preventing this winter sickness. Your body needs rest, it needs time to slow down, and it needs time to adjust to the changes of the sun. We are not smarter than our bodies, so let’s not forget that. Overcrowding your calendar is like asking your body to feel excited or happy when you’re not actually feeling that at all, and it’s almost impossible to force. Same with when our bodies are tired and need rest and we continue to wear them out, it’s almost impossible for them to force themselves to keep going. And why would we want to force it anyway? We want to listen when are bodies are speaking to us.

Getting more rest is one step, and the other step is the more obvious one, what we’re eating! Dairy, sugar and processed foods can all enhance the growth of mucus. Eating natural remedying foods helps with immune function and aside from that, it is warming and nurturing on the body. Cayenne feels like a little superhero spice that goes through your entire system and clears it out with one sweep. For me, I like to add extra cayenne to my bowl because it soothes my throat and get’s the goods flowing every single time without fail. The veggies are nutrient dense and the curry powder/turmeric, well, turmeric is magic. Need I say more? You can read all about its amazingness here.

 

 

The cherry on top to this kick the sniffles soup is that it’s base is water. So not only are you nourishing yourself but you’re hydrating as well. This soup is the answer you’ve been seeking, 4 boxes of tissues later.

 

Ingredients

Mirepoix mix (carrot, onion, celery). you can buy pre-cut but it will be a bit of a bigger investment)

Zucchini

Wild Rice

Curry Powder

Salt

Cayenne Pepper (ground)

Garlic Powder

White Vinegar

Water

Instructions
  1. In a large pot, sauté mirepoix mix (celery, carrot, onion) in 1/4 cup of olive oil. Mix around and coat all of the veggies in olive oil.
  2. Continue to mix until veggies start softening and onions start to become translucent. Add extra tablespoon of olive oil if necessary.
  3. Add water and mix.
  4. Add zucchini, vinegar and spices. Mix Well.
  5. Turn heat up on stove and bring soup to a light boil and cook until veggies are soft and broth is hot.
  6. Add cooked rice to personal serving to avoid it getting mushy.
  7. Store leftovers in refrigerator or freezer.
